A grand jury is an assemblage of citizens authorized under the law to delve into potential criminal conduct and ascertain if adequate grounds exist to proceed with formal criminal proceedings.

Authority and Purpose

Established by federal or state statutes, grand juries are tasked with examining evidence and determining if there is sufficient cause to issue an indictment, thereby initiating a trial wherein the evidence will be presented before a petit jury.
